Adolescence is a pivotal time for developing social skills, self-confidence, and meaningful relationships. For neurodivergent teens, traditional social settings can often feel overwhelming or unaccommodating. That’s where structured, interest-based groups—like our new board game group at Get Centered Counseling—can make a significant difference.
Why Board Games?
Board games are more than just entertainment; they serve as tools for learning and connection. Research indicates that board games can enhance executive functioning skills such as planning, flexibility, and emotional regulation. For neurodivergent teens, these games offer a structured yet engaging environment to practice social interactions, turn-taking, and problem-solving in a low-pressure setting.
They also offer the chance to practice navigating unpredictability in a safe, supported way—like handling disappointment when a move doesn’t go as planned, collaborating with teammates, or advocating for personal needs during gameplay. These small moments help teens develop emotional resilience and self-awareness over time.
A Neuroaffirming Approach to Social Growth
Our board game group is designed with neurodivergent teens in mind, providing a supportive space where they can be themselves. The group is led by a neuroaffirming therapist who creates intentional opportunities for participants to practice:
- Self-advocacy – learning to express needs clearly and assertively
- Boundary-setting – recognizing comfort levels and respecting others’
- Perspective-taking – exploring the thoughts and intentions of others during collaborative play
- Emotion regulation – practicing coping tools when things feel frustrating or overwhelming
- Flexible thinking – adapting to rule changes, new strategies, or unexpected outcomes
We also offer accommodations like AAC support, flexible breaks, and full acceptance of stimming and sensory needs. Rather than viewing behaviors through a deficit lens, we honor each teen’s unique strengths and work from a foundation of connection, curiosity, and collaboration.
