Young adulthood is an exciting time, but for many, it can also trigger feelings of depression, anxiety, and stress. With new experiences such as college, adult relationships, and full-time work, many young adults find themselves missing the ease of their childhoods. From college and career stress to relationship issues to changing family dynamics, many aspects of young adulthood can lead to mental health concerns.
When the challenges of the young adult journey start to feel overwhelming, speaking with a licensed counselor is a helpful first step toward healing. Get Centered Counseling offers therapy services specifically tailored for college students and younger adults.
How can therapy benefit college students and young adults?
Therapy can be extremely beneficial for college students and young adults, as it allows them to speak openly about their issues without the fear of being judged. Trained therapists listen objectively and offer insight that helps young adults get to the root cause of their problems. With regular therapy, young adults can learn new ways to cope with stress and anxious feelings, which can greatly improve their overall quality of life.
Young adult issues therapy can help with
Whether you’re leaving home for the first time to start college out of state or juggling a full-time job and a new relationship straight out of high school, young adulthood is a complex age to navigate, full of different types of life transitions. While stress is common in adults of all ages, financial worries, feelings of isolation, and uncertainty about the future are all common stress triggers for young adults.
Therapy can help
younger generations by offering a safe space for them to discuss their fears and worries. Our mental health professionals listen objectively and provide young adults with helpful coping skills that they can access when exposed to stressful triggers.
What are therapy sessions like?
While the specifics of therapy sessions can vary from person to person, they typically consist of a one-on-one conversation between a therapist and their client. At the start of the session, the therapist may ask the client to talk about any issues they may be experiencing and what their overall goals are in terms of therapy. As the client speaks, the therapist listens empathetically, without interruption or criticism of any kind.
All conversations between therapists and their clients are completely confidential, and clients are encouraged to be as open and honest as possible. The therapist may take notes during the session and provide insightful responses without giving their personal opinion.
At the end of the session, the therapist might suggest exercises, books, and self-help techniques for the client to work on at home. Some therapists refer to this as “homework,” similar to school assignments. In some cases, therapy consists of a single session, while other clients may visit their therapists weekly or monthly.

Frequently Asked Questions
How Long Do Therapy Sessions Take?
Most appointments are about 50 minutes. You’ll have time to talk, reflect, and build skills you can use outside of sessions.
- check in on what’s been going on since your last session
- talk through your goals, stressors, relationships, school, work, and symptoms
- practice coping tools and strategies that fit your day-to-day life
- wrap up with next steps, including optional “homework” between sessions
What you share is confidential, with the usual legal and safety exceptions. Some people come for a single visit, while others meet weekly, biweekly, or monthly, depending on their needs.
Do You Offer In-Person And Online Therapy Sessions?
Yes. We offer in-person sessions at our office in Town and Country, MO, and online therapy sessions. If your schedule or needs change, you can also talk with your therapist about switching formats.
Do You Accept Insurance Or Offer Sliding-Scale Fees?
Payment options vary, and we’ll help you understand what applies to your situation. We can discuss whether you can use insurance benefits (including out-of-network options) and help with any paperwork you may need.
How Long Does Therapy For Young Adults Usually Last?
It depends on your goals, the concerns you’re working through, and what support feels right for you. Many young adults start with a short-term plan of about six to eight sessions, and you’ll review progress together along the way.
How Can Parents Or Friends Support A Young Adult Starting Therapy?
Your support can make a meaningful difference. You can help by listening without trying to “fix” things, respecting privacy, and encouraging your loved one to keep going when therapy feels hard. Practical help—like offering a ride, helping with scheduling, or simply checking in—can also reduce stress and make it easier to stay consistent.
