Counselor In Training
Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, struggling to balance responsibilities, navigating a new transition, or questioning your identity, Sylvia is committed to creating a warm and welcoming space where you can feel safe, supported, and accepted. She strives to provide affirming, culturally responsive care that honors each individual’s identities and lived experiences. By working collaboratively and drawing on practical, evidence-based strategies, Sylvia helps clients recognize and utilize their strengths, navigate challenges, and work toward meaningful change.
Sylvia works with teens (13+), college students, and adults of all ages dealing with stress, anxiety, OCD, ADHD, life transitions, and identity-related concerns. She is especially passionate about supporting adolescents and young adults as they navigate the changes that accompany emerging adulthood. Additionally, she is passionate about providing an affirming and empowering space for those identifying as LGBTQ+ to explore their identities and process unique difficulties.
In the therapy room, Sylvia emphasizes curiosity and collaboration. She works with clients to develop goals that are consistent with their values and strengths. Though she tailors counseling to each individual, she tends to draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help clients develop practical coping strategies, build self-understanding, and progress toward the changes that they envision for themselves. Furthermore, she integrates multicultural counseling to acknowledge the intersectional forces that shape clients’ experiences and worldviews.
Sylvia earned her Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Psychology and Spanish from Saint Louis University. Currently, she is working toward her Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, along with a Graduate Certificate in Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling, at the CACREP-accredited counseling program at University of Missouri-St. Louis. She is working under the supervision of Kathy Simmons, M.Ed., LPC, NCC.
Throughout her training, she has gained experience serving Spanish-speaking, immigrant, refugee, and unhoused communities; assisting adults facing a range of physical and mental health concerns in a hospital setting; supporting students at the undergraduate and graduate levels; and counseling adolescent and adult clients coping with depression, anxiety, trauma, family and relationship concerns, work-life imbalance, and perfectionism.
Outside of the therapy room, Sylvia enjoys reading, maintaining her Duolingo streak, going to concerts, hiking, and spending time with her partner, friends, and family. She appreciates the opportunity to hear her clients’ stories and witness their journeys toward change and growth.
Sylvia is Welcoming New Clients and sees adolescents and adults at the 14135 Clayton Road location.
