Kathy Simmons Counselor/Therapist M.Ed., PLPC, NCC
Kathy works from a strengths-based perspective and highlights the potential of each of her clients. While working with children, she utilizes play therapy techniques and is training to become a Registered Play Therapist. Her sessions may also include other experiential and creative means such as art and sandtray, depending on the client’s needs and interests. Kathy wants teens to gain insight into their challenges and helps them grow more self-awareness, coping skills, and healthy connections. With parent clients, Kathy wants to normalize the challenges and emotional toll of caretaking and empowers them through psychoeducation and validation.
Kathy has an extensive history of working with children, adolescents, and their families from diverse backgrounds. Her professional journey includes residential facilities, school settings at every grade level, and office-based counseling. Kathy has helped children and adolescents afflicted with depression, anxiety, family conflict, trauma, behavior issues, school concerns, grief/loss, low self-esteem, unhealthy relationships, suicidality, self-harm, anger management, and substance use. She also works with parents and guardians to strengthen the relationship with their child, promote appropriate interventions, and find ways to practice self-care.
Kathy graduated from the CACREP-accredited Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program at the University of Missouri – St Louis. The program is nationally recognized as one of the best in the country and is staffed with some of the most renowned clinicians. Kathy is a Provisionally Licensed Professional Counselor (PLPC) and a National Certified Counselor (NCC). She is also actively training for her Registered Play Therapist (RPT) credential to be used with children and adolescents. Supervised by Brooke Harris, MA, LPC, RPT-S.
